Researchers have developed a robotic scarecrow in an effort to create bird scarecrows that are more socially acceptable than sound-based methods commonly used.

Most farmers associate these loud noises, usually from propane canons or firecrackers, with traditional scarecrows that mimic the shape of humans to keep birds away from their crops.

Tests on apple and pear orchards showed that the losses caused by the birds almost completely disappeared within three weeks.
